RECONSTRUCTION ERA HOUSE PRESERVATION

Built in the late 19th century, this house was occupied by the Hutchinson family until the late 1980s. The Hutchinsons were an influential African-American family on Edisto Island after the civil war, and this house was proudly constructed with ornate details. After the house fell into disrepair, the Edisto Island Open Land Trust took on the project of stabilizing the structure, repairing it, and restoring it to its original appearance. A weatherproof envelope was created to allow for the restoration. The foundation and framing were augmented as needed, and the siding was repaired or replaced in kind where missing. While the existing structure was repaired, the interiors have been preserved as found.
